. feeling the love. what are the expectations coming from the romney campaign for paul ryan's big night tonight? here what happens his senior adviser, dan senor told chuck todd this morning, when it was really cold. >> he has to make the case about the choice in the election, all right? things have been rough over the last four years and it's incumbent on president obama and vice president biden to explain what exactly has happened over the last four years 23 million americans out of work, 47 million americans on food stamps 1 in 6 americans in poverty have them explain the rational for why they deserve a second term. there is a choice as it relates to the budgets, they are running on the romney/ryan agenda. governor romney laid out a plan, his five-point plan for the middle class. >> nbc's ron mott has been covering congressman ryan throughout and traveling with him and interviewing dan senor as well, and joins me now here. you've been with ryan camp. what is the mood? they must have gotten pumped up. >> totally. >> by the romney performance. now there's a whole expectation game for th

and for this ticket which is beyond being rhetorically tougher than this administration, what is it that romney/ryan would do differently on some of these difficult matters? >> i wanted to show mitt romney in richmond today on this whole same subject. >> the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he's doubling down on denial. >> to this day, to this day, we do not have a complete picture. we do not have all the answers. no one in this administration has ever claimed otherwise. >> and that wasn't the only foreign policy issue. another was iran. also afghanistan. interesting partly because of martha raddtz's experience and expertise and talk about winners and losers, the winner of that debate was martha raddtz my friend and colleague at abc but also on iran you have two completely different postures. >> 100%. actually, for -- having said that, that paul ryan was kind of along for the ride i will say for a debate that was, it was supposed to be domestic and foreign policy it was both of those things but a lot of foreign policy. for a guy who has no real

president obama and joe biden in the way that romney and ryan are trying to get around talking about it. >> i think also ryan was going out of his way to appear sort of moderate and not is logically extreme and then was asked about the abortion question and really like, you know, kind of had a nonanswer almost because he doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose and -- >> he doesn't even agree with romney. when he said in a romney administration here's what position would be. that's not his position. he's actually more extreme than governor romney. >> he was the one sponsoring amendments with -- >> legitimate rape, which i like biden got that in there too. >> that's a separate ding. >> ben, the math thing has always been a trick of late, the arithmetic has been tricky for ryan, i'm referring to interviews with brit hume and chris wallace where he didn't have enough time to explain the math and didn't want to get wonky, a math exchange, let's play this about the 20% across-the-board tax cut. >> you can cut tax rates by 20% and preserve these important preferences for middle class -- >

/biden team you'll get another four years like the last four years with the romney/ryan team, a real recovery with more jobs for everybody. >> now politico is reporting today that ann romney and tagg his son, one of his sons did an intervention to try to save the campaign if you will and let mitt be mitt and get the candidate to talk more about himself, talk more emotionally to give the foreign policy speech. in pushing back against some of the staff. can you help us out on that? what is the -- your perspective about it? >> i saw the story. it's a silly little story. there's no truth to it. we're focused on big things. yesterday the governor gave a speech where he talked about some of the very real foreign policy challenges facing us. he talked about building 15 ships a year so we can build up our navy. he talked about the importance of reforming our foreign assistance and linking it to positive outcomes. he talked about stopping iran's reckless pursuit for a nuclear weapon. these are the issues and the challenges that we're focused on. we're not distracted by some of the nonsense stories tha

romney and ryan support preserving tax cuts for all the capital gains and carried interest. everything else, my friend, your mortgage interest tax deduction and everything else is on table. >> okay. if that was the high point of joe biden talking about the economy last night we have a long way to go. americans still don't believe the stimulus worked. we're dealing with the weak economy. that's reality to people. >> but we also know , jonathan, let me jump in here. congressman ryan, they heard that he asked for stimulus money. are democrats now fired up? we were in kentucky live. we talked to people all day, talked to people this morning. i found it intriguing that people have been criticizing joe biden. we clearly know what his mission was. i even said we should play the music from "mission: impossible" and show his face. his commission was clear, he opened the envelope, he read it, it get get 'em and he did. obviously conservatives would not like that tone, not like that congressman ryan was interrupted, i believe they said like 17 times. who's counting. the bottom line, david, was it

think we'll hear lots about the future. >> speaking of details, mitt romney and paul ryan are pressed for their plans. specifically the 20% across the board tax cut. why are they being so vague and will governor romney get specific at this debate? >> you know, it's funny. it cuts both ways. i think the reason they're not going specific is because they don't want to be attacked. they put the romney and ryan ticket on the defense. but i've heerd governor romney say this. he says i want to work in a bipartisan way. i want to work with democrats on capitol hill. i want to do what george w. bush did with no child left behind. that's to allow the congress -- that is to allow the legislative branch to be a part of the process. and thus in the process create or draft a piece of legislation that we can all work with. so i think it's a combination of both answers, alex. >> president obama had tough reviews following the first debate. what do you think is the greatest challenge in round two? >> the white house said to make adjustments. i think it's to make the adjustments without overcorrecting
